Seedings Hold Firm As Neb Teams Open

Denise Gellner Correspondent

Everything went by the numbers on the first day of the Northeast District B boys and girls basketball tournaments at Spokane Falls Community College on Monday.

In boys action, undefeated Sprague-Harrington (24-0), the BiCounty League’s first seed, edged the Panorama League’s fourth seed, St. George’s, 48-45, and Northwest Christian (17-8), No. 2 from the Panorama, whipped Davenport, the Bi-County’s No. 3, 67-46 behind Jason Iverson’s 21 points.

On the girls side, St. George’s (23-1), the Panorama League’s first seed and defending State B champion, got an easy 74-56 win over Reardan, the Bi-County League’s fourth seed, with the Dragons’ Chrissy Peterson scoring 34 points and pulling down seven boards, and Wilbur-Creston (21-3), Bi-County No. 2, beat Panorama No. 3 Inchelium 74-55 as Jessica Martin scored 31 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Boys

The Sprague-Harrington Falcons were down 23-20 at the half before coming out with an 18-point third quarter to reclaim the lead.

“We gave up way too many secondshot opportunities,” Falcons coach Jay Aune said. “We were very tentative offensively.”

Ryan Floyd led the Falcons with 17 points and eight rebounds while the Dragons’ Mike Thomas pulled down 14 boards as St. George’s (15-10) outrebounded the Falcons 29-18.

“The way the game went tonight, it was probably one of our poorest outings,” Aune said.

The Falcons will face defending State B champion Northwest Christian at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

“We’re going to have to play one of our best games of the year to stay with them the way they looked tonight,” Aune said. “There are some things we have to get straightened out; if we can do that in one day, we’ll be OK.”

St. George’s faces Davenport (13-13) at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

St. George’s was missing starter Cherea Davis, who is out for the rest of the season with torn knee ligaments that require reconstructive surgery.

“That was one thing we were worried about,” coach Ross Thomas said. “We were sort of improvising positions.

“I thought it was a good effort,” Thomas said. “I like this team a lot. I think this tournament is tougher this year and that the four Bi-County teams are four of the top seven in the state.”

Jackie Humphrey led Reardan (15-9) with 17 points and Tyna Titchenal and Lisa Bocook added 15 each.

The Dragons’ next opponent is WilburCreston at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

“We haven’t seen them this year. It would be wonderful to beat them and get back into state again,” Thomas said.
