Boeing Loses Order To British Competitor

Compiled From Wire Services

The Westland Group of Britain has edged out Boeing Co. of Seattle for the bulk of a $1.58 billion helicopter order by the Royal Air Force, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.

Lufthansa airlines also announced it was ordering new planes from Airbus Industrie to replace aging Boeing jets.

The Ministry of Defense has decided to buy between 20 and 25 EH101 transport helicopters, a medium-size aircraft developed by Westland and Agusta SpA of Italy, and eight to 10 of Boeing’s larger Chinook helicopters, the report said. The RAF already has a fleet of 30 Chinook aircraft.
