Permission Given To Build Shadle Branch Library
The city Parks and Recreation Department has given the Spokane Public Library permission to build a branch library on the northwest corner of Shadle Park.
The library and the parks department are still ironing out details of the plan.
The library will be built on park land near the corner of Wellesley Avenue and Belt Street.
The library will pay for some improvements to Shadle Park to compensate for the use of park land.
The Spokane City Council will have the final say on the agreement.
The library has been looking for a spot to build a new Shadle branch library since voters passed a $29 million bond issue in 1990 to pay for construction of several library buildings.
The library was unable to find land for a new Shadle branch in the already highly developed northwest Spokane neighborhood. So several months ago, it began talks with the Parks Department about using some park land.
The new building will replace the library branch in Shadle Center. It will be built on the site of a parking lot. A new parking lot will be built next to it.
