File Cabinet Keeps Papers Organized

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Do-it-yourselfers can stop tearing their closets apart looking for that one shoebox full of receipts, tax returns, warranties and bills. At home or in the office, this threedrawer file cabinet will keep important documents and papers organized.

The file cabinet’s drawers glide smoothly on drawer guides and hold standard hanging file frames and folders, which are available at most stationery stores. With brass drawer pulls and other custom touches, this functional piece of furniture can be an attractive one, too.

Materials for this file cabinet project include 28 boardfeet of oak or another lumber, three sheets of plywood, dowel pins, nails, glue, stain and finishing hardware.

The project is a fairly uncomplicated one because all of the cuts are straight cuts of oak and plywood. Exact measurements for each cut are given in a complete cutting schedule.

After sawing out the pieces, just follow step-by-step instructions to assemble the cabinet’s parts using dowel pins, nails and glue. Then apply finish and attach the drawer pulls.

The completed file cabinet measures 44 inches tall by 19 inches wide by 21 inches deep.

The Three-Drawer File Cabinet plan, No. 727, is $6.50 and includes step-by-step instructions with 15 photos, exploded assembly diagrams, a complete shopping list and cutting schedule, and a source for finishing hardware.

Also available for $6.50 is a similarly styled two-drawer file cabinet, No. 705. In addition, a catalog picturing hundreds of other do-it-yourself projects for indoors and out is available for $3.95. Prices include sales tax, postage and handling.
