History Essay Contest Winners Announced

Spokane Garry Chapter, National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution, recently held an American History Essay Contest for students in grades 5 to 8.

Their essays told of “Living in America in Colonial Days: 1607-1776.”

The winners were:

Fifth grade, Cataldo Catholic School: Mary Ann Nevers, first place; and Meghan Elizabeth Burns, second place.

Sixth grade, Cataldo Catholic School: Stephanie Stone, first place; and Benn Everett Coulter, second place.

Seventh grade, St. Francis Catholic School: Daniel Waterbly, first place; and Travis Wissink, second place.

Eighth grade, St. Francis Catholic School: Andrew Philip Brenden Beyer, first place; and Drew Piper, second place.

First-place essays will now be judged on the state level.

The Spokane Garry Chapter also submitted three local entries to the state level for judging in its national Junior American Citizens Contest on the topic “Waterways Impact America.”

Entries from sixth-grade students of Cataldo Catholic School are:

Jolyn Gisselberg, artwork-poster; Brian Guthrie, artwork-stamp design; and Jennifer Zappone, creative writing-poetry.

Christine Letson, a 1990 graduate of Central Valley High School, has earned a 4.0 gradepoint average for the fall semester at the University of Idaho. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary society and recipient of the Nettie Mae Stillinger scholarship in 1993-94 and 1994-95. She is currently student teaching history in Kendrick, Idaho. She is the daughter of Diana Letson and Robert Letson.

James Annis Jr., son of James Annis and Florence Annis, both of Spokane, has received the Navy Good Conduct Medal. A hospitalman, he maintained a satisfactory level of performance and an unblemished conduct record for a four-year period.

Spokane Art School was voted first in the visual art classes category for Family Magazine’s second annual “Best for Families” readers’ poll. This is the second consecutive year the art school has been chosen for this honor.

The Post Falls Historical Society has elected the following slate of officers and board of directors for the following year:

Joe Doellefeld was elected president; Cecil Meyer, vice president; John Sherwood, secretary; and Cindy Doellefeld, treasurer.

Board members are: Avery Bright, Kim Brown, Alice Hardison, Don Kamps, Jean Sherwood, Donna Rae Sweeney, and Bob Templin.
