Cheney Dumps Champs Blackhawks Face Colville Next; Cheney Girls Take On Pullman
When the Cheney and West Valley boys meet in the Excell Foods Frontier League district basketball tournament, they never say goodbye, just, “Until we meet again.”
The Blackhawks and Eagles met in a typical hard-nosed thriller Friday night at Eastern Washington University’s Reese Court, but the fourth-seeded Hawks had a 73-65 surprise for WV, winner of five straight Frontier regular-season championships.
Cheney (9-12) will meet Colville (11-10) tonight at 8:45 in a boys winners’ bracket game after a 7 p.m. contest between the top-seeded Cheney girls and Pullman, both first-round winners.
The Colville boys (11-10) defeated Pullman 70-63 Friday night, while thirdranked Cheney (21-0) downed WV’s girls 60-42 and Pullman (13-8) held off Colville 48-42.
The Colville girls (10-11) meet West Valley (8-13) in an 11 a.m. loser-out contest, followed by the WV boys (17-4) and Pullman (14-7) in another loser-out game.

The Cheney boys trailed by 11 points shortly before halftime, but the Blackhawks flew back to tie the score at 33 in the first minute of the second half, took a narrow lead and extended it to 44-39 later in the third period.
WV came back to tie it at 50, but Cheney rebounded to lead 63-56 with 3 minutes to play, and the Eagles - struggling from 3-point range - never really mounted a rally. The closest they got in the late going was 64-60.

Matt Smith scored 22 of Colville’s 32 secondhalf points, but a critical technical foul damaged Pullman after the Indians had fought back within a point.
With 2:46 to play, Matt Wilde, Pullman’s leading scorer, was at the foul line for a one-andone attempt. The free throw was clean, but Wilde, who scored 25 points, was called for a foul-line violation and then a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Smith made one of two FTs to tie and sophomore Tim Sprangers followed with a 3-pointer for a 63-60 Colville lead. After a Pullman miss, Smith had a putback and free throw for a 66-60 lead with 1:42 to play.
Pullman’s Tim Wang hit a fadeaway 3 with 1:05 left, but the Hounds didn’t score again while Smith added two more free throws and an assist on Colville’s last basket.
Smith finished with 26 points and nine rebounds. Wilde made 10 of 13 shots and Wang hit five 3’s, scoring 25 points.

Girls
Pullman 48, Colville 42
Pullman’s girls, leading by four points late in the first period, scored 10 straight points to take a 22-8 lead.
They held Colville to only two field goals - and six points - in the second, extending their lead to 16 points late in the quarter.
But the Greyhounds, with four starters 5-foot10 or taller, didn’t take care of the basketball, and their carelessness helped Colville pull back into it. The Indians trailed by only three points several times in the fourth period and could have given the contest a different look.
As it was, though, Pullman made 22 turnovers, but Colville made only 7 of 17 at the foul line, and three was as close as it got.
