Chambreau Breaks Ewu Mark, Ncaa Standard In Weight Toss
Noah Chambreau of Eastern Washington University set a school record and met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 35-pound weight throw at the Last Chance Indoor Track and Field Meet in EWU’s Thorpe Fieldhouse on Saturday.
His throw of 60 feet, 4 inches broke his own school record of 58-1 set earlier this season, and provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships in two weeks at Indianapolis.
College baseball
Carter Masterson ripped a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Jared Wong followed with a grand slam in the seventh as Gonzaga University won its opener, beat ing Chico State 14-10 in Chico, Calif.
Masterson also added an RBI single in the seventh inning as the Zags rolled to a 14-1 lead.
Chico State (6-5-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and added seven in the ninth to make it close.
GU starter Darin Blood allowed four hits and struck out eight in the first six innings.
College wrestling
At Corvallis, Ore., Arizona State won the Pacific-10 Conference wrestling title, edging defending champion Oregon State by 2.5 points.
The Sun Devils scored 126 points by placing nine of their 10 wrestlers in the top six, including three champions.
Oregon’s Kevin Roberts, a graduate of University High, lost in the 118-pound finals, dropping a 4-3 decision to Danny Felix of Arizona State.
The top three placers in each weight class qualified for the NCAA Championships to be held March 16-18 at the University of Iowa.
An additional eight wild-card entries will also be awarded in the Pac10.
Junior hockey
Castlegar grabbed a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoff series with Spokane, beating the Braves 4-1 at home.
Castlegar scored twice in the second period. The series resumes today at 2 p.m. at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in Spokane.
