Cougs’ Antrum Top Newcomer In Pacific-10

Junior guard Shamon Antrum of Washington State earned the prestigious Fred Hessler Award as the Newcomer of the Year in Pacific-10 Conference men’s basketball on Monday.

This is the third year of the award, named in honor of the late UCLA broadcaster and selected by Pac-10 radio play-by-play announcers.

Antrum, the first Cougar to earn the award, is a transfer from Dixie College in Utah and was the first recruit of first-year WSU head coach Kevin Eastman.

The 5-foot-10 guard from New Haven, Conn., has started all 23 games for the 14-9 Cougars and is their third-leading scorer (14.2) and second-leading rebounder (4.5). He leads WSU with 46 3-point baskets, the ninth best single-season total in school history.

Idaho senior guard Mark Leslie shares the Big Sky Conference men’s Player of the Week honor.

Leslie, honored with Montana’s Matt Kempfert, produced two home wins by hitting the winning shots against both Northern Arizona and first-place Weber State and scored 48 points with seven assists.

Hockey

Former Spokane Chiefs star Valeri Bure was called up by the NHL Montreal Canadiens from Fredericton, New Brunswick, of the American League, where he had 23 goals and 25 assists in 45 games.

Castlegar swept Spokane out of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs, beating the Braves 6-4 Monday night at Eagles Ice-A-Rena to wrap up the best-of-seven series in four games.

The short-handed Braves got goals from Brandon Whitver, Darin and Tony Talotti and Tyler Herron.

Football

Washington State has landed a fifth transfer for its 1995 football team.

Coach Mike Price announced that Major Norton, a running back from San Francisco City College, signed a letter of intent to attend WSU this fall.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder from Vallejo, Calif., gained 1,543 yards on 216 carries, scored 15 touchdowns and caught eight passes for 102 yards to earn first-team all-league honors as a freshman last fall at San Francisco CC.

General

Two members of Washington State’s 1994 Alamo Bowl championship football team were among four persons arrested early Sunday morning in connection with a series of fights at a fraternity house on campus.

According to Pullman police, senior reserve quarterback Derek Chapman, 22, was charged with felonious third-degree assault in connection with the incident, in which two police officers reportedly suffered minor injuries trying to break up fights.

David Knuff, 21, a sophomore backup tight end, was charged with fourth-degree assault, police said.

The two others arrested were former WSU baseball players Jason Evenhus and Donald E. Barowsky.
