Wppss Plant Automatically Shuts Down

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Washington Public Power Supply nuclear plant has been shut down because a computer circuit board that regulates electrical turbines failed.

Plant No. 2 shut down automatically Sunday, WPPSS said.

“The plant performed as designed for an automatic shutdown, and we are currently replacing the failed computer circuit board,” spokesman Vic Parrish said Monday in a news release.

While the plant is shut down for another day or two, workers will take the opportunity to repair three instruments in the containment vessel that monitor reactor conditions while the plant is being started up or shut down, WPPSS said.

Three of eight monitors performed only sporadically during the restart of Plant No. 2 last week. The plant had been shut down for five days because of an error made during monthly tests of the turbine throttle valves.
