Girls basketball

Visiting Sandpoint started to pull away at the end of the first quarter, then used a big third quarter to top Coeur d’Alene 65-37 in an Inland Empire League girls basketball game Tuesday night.

Alli Nieman led the Bulldogs (3-1 in league, 12-3 overall) with 20 points. Jill Pederson led the Vikings (0-4, 3-12) with 10 points.

Sandpoint enjoyed a huge advantage at the free-throw line. The Bulldogs made 19 of 35 foul shots while CdA went to the line just twice.

Ann Sheppard scored 12 of her gamehigh 22 points in the third quarter as the Trojans (4-10) defeated the Indians (4-5) at Colville.

Heidi Umthun hit two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to clinch the nonleague win for Post Falls.
