Basement Fire Forces Building Evacuation

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Browne’s Addition apartment building was evacuated early Saturday when a fire started in the basement.

Firefighters put out the 3:13 a.m. fire in a storage room and hallway before it spread to the apartments, said Battalion Chief Dick Schuerman.

Smoke spread throughout the building at W1827 Riverside, and a resident who helped firefighters get inside was taken to a hospital to be examined, Schuerman said.

He had no further information on the resident, nor the number of people driven from their apartments.

Investigators were trying to determine the cause on Saturday.
