Ku Takes Inside Route In Victory Against Missouri
Scot Pollard and Sean Pearson each scored 22 points and No. 3 Kansas dominated inside for a 102-89 victory over No. 17 Missouri on Monday night at Columbia, Mo. The win ended the Tigers’ 16-game Big Eight winning streak.
Missouri (1-1, 10-2), which beat Kansas twice last season en route to an unbeaten season in the conference, got outrebounded 44-33. Raef LaFrentz had 16 rebounds for the Jayhawks.
Free-throw shooting also cost the Tigers a chance to keep the streak alive as they went 16 for 29.
Paul O’Liney scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half and Marlo Finner had all 10 of his points after halftime as Missouri cut a 13-point halftime deficit to five points four times. But Finner, a career 41-percent freethrow shooter entering the season, was 2 for 7 from the free-throw line.
Kansas iced the game with 15-for-18 free-throw shooting in the second half.
Jerod Haase added 18 points and Jacque Vaughn 17 for Kansas (11-1, 1-0), which has won 11 of its last 12 Big Eight openers. Vaughn had six assists.
Julian Winfield added 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Missouri.
Kansas has won four its last five games at Missouri, annually a pivotal meeting in the conference. The winner of this game has won or shared the Big Eight championship the last five seasons.
(8) Syracuse 61, Villanova 60
Lawrence Moten’s first 3-pointer of the game came with 6.6 seconds to play and gave the Orangemen (4-0 Big East, 11-1) a win against the Wildcats (2-2, 8-5) at Syracuse, N.Y.
Villanova had a final chance to win, calling a timeout with 2.4 seconds to play. Jonathan Haynes inbounded the ball at halfcourt to Alvin Williams, who was whistled for traveling as he tried to catch the ball under pressure from the Syracuse defense.
Moten, who had missed his first six shots from 3-point range, finished with 14 points. John Wallace and Michael Lloyd scored 12 and 10, respectively, for Syracuse, which saw a seven-point lead evaporate in the second half while it went 6:23 without scoring.
(24) N. Mexico St. 85, UC Irvine 80
Paul Jarrett matched his career high with 19 points and made two free throws with 10 seconds left to help the Aggies (2-1 Big West, 11-3) beat the Anteaters (0-3, 4-6).
Jarrett had 10 points and a steal during a 19-11 run that helped the Aggies push a three-point lead to 76-65 with 4 minutes left.
But Irvine’s Mark Simmons scored four of his 25 points during a 13-4 rally that pulled the Anteaters within 80-78 with 57 seconds left.
New Mexico State’s Troy Brewer made 3 of 4 free throws to increase the lead to five, then Irvine’s Raimonds Miglinieks make a layup to cut the margin to 83-80. After a timeout, the Aggies worked the ball to Jarrett, who was fouled with 10 seconds left and made both free throws to seal the win.
