Canadian Dollar Hits 9-Year Low

The Canadian dollar fell to a nineyear low against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, despite an increase in shortterm interest rates by the Bank of Canada and the central bank’s intervention to support the currency.

The American dollar, meanwhile, was mixed against other major currencies, declining vs. the German mark and advancing slightly against the Japanese yen in relatively quiet trading.

The Mexican financial market plunge Tuesday appeared to have little impact on the dollar.

In late New York trading, the Canadian dollar was quoted at 70.88 U.S. cents, down from 70.99 cents late Monday and the lowest level since March 1986.
