Diabetic Man Rescued From Remote Cabin

From Staff Reports

Authorities rescued a diabetic Post Falls man from a remote Priest Lake cabin Tuesday, after he ran out of insulin and became sick.

Ron Jones, 39, snowmobiled to the cabin near Horton Ridge Sunday and was supposed to return later that night. Authorities said he apparently became ill, disoriented and could not make it out of the woods.

Jones was flown by helicopter to Kootenai Medical Center Tuesday afternoon and was in good condition.

“I don’t think he would have been able to make it out without some help,” said Bonner County Undersheriff Nick Krager.

When Jones failed to come home Sunday night his wife notified the sheriff’s department. She told authorities her husband likely decided to stay overnight at the cabin and was an experienced outdoorsman with winter gear and enough food for a day.

Since Jones was a diabetic, Krager said rescuers on snowmobiles were sent Monday to check on him. Authorities found his snowmobile parked under a tree, but it was too dark to hike the rough terrain to the cabin.

Rescue units from Bonner and Boundary County went back for Jones on Tuesday morning, gave him insulin, and had him airlifted to the hospital.
