M’S To Get New Stadium?
Faced with the possibility of losing the Seattle Mariners after the team’s Kingdome lease runs out in 1996, a task force recommended a baseball-only, retractable-roof stadium be built by King County.
The expected cost: $261 million.
At a news conference, the 28-member Stadium Alternative Task Force, appointed by King County Executive Gary Locke, proposed a 45,000-seat stadium be constructed, with the Mariners to pay about 35 percent of the cost.
The 65 percent public stake would come from user and beneficiary taxes and fees which would include an increase in the car rental tax, a surcharge on Mariners tickets and creation of a business improvement district in the area most directly benefiting from the new stadium.
The new ballpark would have about 4,000 luxury seats and 70 sky boxes.
