County Gets Grant For Safety Programs

From Staff And Wire Reports

The SAFECO Insurance Company has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department for a campaign to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The grant will help schools in the Central Valley, East Valley, West Valley, Mead, Riverside, Nine Mile Falls and Deer Park districts with safety cones for crosswalks.

The safety cones will be a reminder to students of where to walk and a sign to drivers that children are using these crosswalks at the time the cones are in place.

A second radar and display unit will be purchased with grant money for use by the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program.

Grant money also will be used for educational handouts, pamphlets and reflective wrist slaps for the pedestrian safety program and to buy a video camera recorder for a DUI car.
