King Holiday Is Much More Than A Day Off
Last year, when I was in the eighth grade in Freeman Junior High, no one even acknowledged the fact that Martin Luther King, Jr. Day even existed. They just thought it was another holiday and there was no school. They didn’t even know why they were getting out.
Why have a holiday if our history teachers are not willing to teach us about this day? How do I know this, because I asked. Their response to me was: We have it covered, we are showing a movie with Whoopie Goldberg.
I just don’t think it’s another day. It’s an important day because it touches on civil rights. If our schools don’t take the time to teach us about this subject, how will we grow and learn as a community?
To me and many other Americans, Martin Luther King Day is more than a Whoopie Goldberg movie.
We should not be ignorant any longer. If schools ignore this man, and all he stood for, it’s a sad day for all Americans. And it’s an even sadder day when a 14-year-old girl knows the difference.
