North Side Gets Groovy
Groovy Shoes? What the heck is that? It is a spirit competition between North Central and Shadle Park high schools, comparable to the Rubber Chicken game between Ferris and LC, or the Stinky Sneaker competition between Central Valley and U-High.
Both NC and Shadle students dress up in school colors and cheer their basketball teams. NC students march from their school on Howard and Washington to the Coliseum to raise spirits before the game.
It’s happening this Friday. The spirit competition starts during the fourth quarter of the girls’ game (which begins at 3:45 p.m.) and ends in the third quarter of the boys’ game. Each school gets a chance to do something spirited during half-time. That’s part of what they’re judged on.
But it’s not all yelling and cheering. The other factor is how each school does on a community service project they’ve chosen. NC is trying to do 4,000 hours of service; Shadle is collecting canned food.
NC has won the Groovy Shoes for the last two years, but Shadle has won the basketball game both times. Who will win this year? Come and see - and hear - for yourself.
