Mickelson Grabs Lead

Phil Mickelson shot a 5-under-par 66 to complete the first two rounds of the Northern Telecom Open golf tournament at Tucson, Ariz., at 12-under 131, one stroke better than Jim Gallagher Jr.

Pullman’s Kirk Triplett carded a twoday score of 140, nine strokes off the pace.

At Orlando, Fla., LPGA veteran Chris Johnson shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a two-shot lead over Meg Mallon and Cathy Johnston-Forbes after the opening round of the $450,000 HealthSouth Inaugural.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, is nine strokes behind at 77.

At Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Colin Montgomerie shot a sparkling 9-underpar 63 and took a three-stroke lead halfway through the Dubai Desert Classic. The event is the first on this year’s PGA European tour. Greg Norman and Fred Couples are tied for second.
