After a three-day tryout camp that drew some 1,300 job hunters, the California Angels signed nine players to help them cope with the strike by the major leaguers.

“Not only are we pleased, but we’re overwhelmed,” said John Sevano, the Angels director of media relations. “The real surprise was Friday (when 987 players showed). It was just mind-boggling. Our scouts had never worked with those kind of numbers. The tryouts were so successful, we’ve decided to regroup as an organization and probably hold these every year now.”

At Davos, Switzerland, five-time Olympic gold medalist Bonnie Blair fell in the women’s 1,000-meter race and lost her overall event lead in the World Cup speedskating standings.

Blair was overtaken by Shiho Kusunose of Japan, whose fourth place in the event and 25 points was enough to put her five points ahead, 150-145.

Bareback bronc rider Denny McLanahan of Canadian, Texas, won a total of $12,399 to be the high money winner at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo that ended at Denver.

McLanahan tied for first in the first round, tied for sixth in the second round, tied for fourth in the third round, placed second in Sunday’s short round and won the average.
