Continental Delays Boeing Jet Order

Compiled From Wire Services

Continental Airlines of Houston announced Thursday that it would delay up to two years purchase of Boeing jets scheduled for delivery beginning next year, increasing the probability of more production cuts at Boeing.

About 39 planes would be delayed. Continental has 62 jets on order worth an estimated $4 billionplus, including 31 737-500s, 14 757s, 12 767-300s and five 777s. Continental is scheduled to take delivery of 23 jets this year. The delivery delays could affect all Boeing assembly lines except the 747 jumbo jet.

The airline said it will accept jets to be delivered this year.

Financially stricken Continental Thursday reported a $2.3 million operating loss in the fourth quarter, compared with an $8.5 million profit the same time last year.
