Take A Rain Check

The 1995 World Alpine Championships will be held in 1996 because there isn’t enough snow.

The first-ever postponement of World Cup skiing’s most coveted competition might have sapped a decade from FIS chief Gian Franco Kasper, who had to deliver the bad news.

It also cost ski fans around the world an opportunity to follow the continuing story of Italian Alberto Tomba and the surprising Americans.

The Americans had hoped to continue their dominance of the women’s downhill. Picabo Street and Hilary Lindh have won two races each.

FIS and the local organizers in this nearly snowless southern Spanish ski resort agreed that the two-week championships could not open Monday, moving instead to hold them here next year in early February. The shift could be made because the next Winter Olympic Games are not until 1998.
