Boxing Brothers Win
The Ruelas brothers, Rafael and Gabriel, retained their world boxing championships.
Rafael, in the final fight of the night at the MGM Grand, sliced bad cuts over Billy Schwer’s eyes and stopped the Briton after eight rounds in defense of the IBF lightweight title.
Gabriel knocked down Fred Liberatore of New York in the first round and cut him over both eyes in stopping him after the second round to keep the WBC super featherweight title.
The Mexican-born Ruelases, from Sylmar, Calif., are the first brothers to retain world championships on the same card. They are only the second set of brothers ever to appear in title fights on the same card.
In between their bouts, Konstantin Tszyu, a long-time amateur star in the former Soviet Union who now lives in Australia, won the IBF junior welterweight title when he knocked down Jake Rodriguez in the sixth.
