Dummies Are Not All That New

For the record, Crash Test Dummies’ leader Brad Roberts answers questions with more than a “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm.”

But one query he can’t answer is how the Dummies, who had a 1991 debut album, qualify for a Best New Artist nomination for this year’s Grammy Awards.

“Maybe new to the Top 100 would be a more accurate description of the category,” says Roberts, 31. Green Day, another nominee in the category, also has previous records to its credit; Grammy organizers have not explained why these bands are eligible.

“We’re new to Americans, not so new to Canadians, I guess,” says Roberts.
