Sta Plaza Setbacks
Among the problems faced by the STA Plaza project:
Concrete floors cracked and curled, delaying installation of Italian tile. The problem might have been avoided if the original choice of embossed concrete had been used.
Crews excavated too far underneath the adjacent Peyton Building, forcing them to reinforce the Peyton’s supports.
A construction contract prohibiting arbitration chased away five of seven bidders. STA officials say the lack of competition contributed greatly to a $500,000 jump in construction costs.
STA used an in-house architect to manage the project, instead of an outside, objective firm.
