Man Faces Chemical-Possession Charges Substance Is Used To Make Methamphetamines

A man with suspected ties to the year-old Spokane chapter of the Hells Angels faces charges of possessing chemicals used to make methamphetamines.

Lucky Beau Carey Jr., 23, is accused in a federal complaint of possession of a precursor chemical, with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.

Carey was arrested late Tuesday after a traffic stop at Trent and Argonne by Washington State Patrol troopers.

Authorities aren’t saying whether the drugs were part of a scheme by the Hells Angels to distribute methamphetamine - one of the outlaw motorcycle club’s trademark crimes.

The chemicals were found in early June when state and local authorities served a series of search warrants on three units at ABC Mini-Storage in the Spokane Valley.

In the units, investigators found 403 grams of methamphetamine oil, chemicals used to make the illegal homemade drug and glassware used for the process.

They did not find an operational meth lab, but say such rental storage units are commonly used for such operations.

The search warrants were served over a week-long period, beginning June 1, when investigators went to a unit rented by Carey.

Investigators were looking for a stolen motorcycle, which they found, in addition to the suspected meth lab chemicals and equipment.

At one point, investigators’ plans to seize the dangerous chemicals were stopped by the County Health District because a disposal plan wasn’t developed.

The storage areas were secured by police while the disposal plan was developed, then the chemicals were seized, authorities said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Johnson said Wednesday that additional charges may be sought against Carey when the case goes to a federal grand jury next month.

Authorities had been looking for Carey since June 13 when the federal complaint, accusing him of possessing methamphetamine chemicals, was filed, Johnson said.

Carey was arrested by sheriff’s deputies on Nov. 29 after a Spokane Valley homeowner reported a burglary. Those charges against Carey are still pending.

Carey was arrested with Evan Barton, 28, who is vice president of the Hells Angels chapter.
