Mead, St. George’s Win Tnt High School Honors Track Titles Helped Panthers, Dragons Secure Award From Tacoma Paper

The big and small of Spokane are the best in Washington.

Mead won The Tacoma News-Tribune’s All-Sports championship for the seventh consecutive year in Class AAA and St. George’s was the top school in Class B.

The Panthers almost doubled the points they had through winter sports with an amazing spring. Mead picked up points in boys and girls golf, boys soccer and tennis, and boys and girls track.

All told, Mead finished with 251 points to 205 for Cascade of Everett. The Panthers entered the spring with 120 points.

“Yes, we had a pretty good year,” Mead activities coordinator John Miller told the TNT. “Especially in the spring.”

Mead’s point total may be the highest in history. The boys repeated as track champion, and the girls were third. In golf, the boys were second and the girls third.

Richland, of the Big Nine Conference, was fifth with 130 points and Kamiakin was seventh with 120. Eight of nine teams in the Big Nine and Greater Spokane League had points.

“The competition is getting tough over here,” Miller said. “I think the competition we see in the Greater Spokane League and in the Big Nine during regional competition only makes us better prepared for state.”

St. George’s won the girls track title for 40 points and finished with 120 points, just ahead of Springdale’s 108. Dayton was fifth, Northwest Christian sixth (90 points), Davenport seventh (86) and Wilbur-Creston ninth (80).

In Class AA, Gig Harbor, with a 90-point spring, also repeated with 204 points. Capital of Olympia was second with 180. No Frontier League teams finished in the top 10. Omak held on to win the Class A crown with 128 points. Chewelah ended up fourth (100).
