2 Seattle Hospitals Ranked Among Best In U.S.
Two area hospitals were ranked among the best in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s annual hospital guide.
The magazine ranked the University of Washington Medical Center among the top 10 hospitals overall. The medical center also ranked in the top 10 in six specialties: rehabilitation, cancer, orthopedics, geriatrics, AIDS and endocrinology.
Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, which is affiliated with the University of Washington School of Medicine, ranked 11th in the nation in pediatrics, according to the magazine rating.
The survey is due on newsstands July 17.
The UW Medical Center ranked in the top 3 percent of hospitals nationwide in seven additional specialties: cardiology, gynecology, neurology, otolaryngology, rheumatology, urology and pediatrics.
The medical center ranked in the top 10 last year and in the top 15 in 1993.
A mathematical model was developed to rank many of the specialties. The model considered three years of U.S. News’ doctors’ surveys, death rate statistics and other statistics like the ratio of registered nurses and physicians to beds.
For four specialties - pediatrics, psychiatry, ophthalmology and rehabilitation - rankings were based solely on a survey of physicians.
