An Apple A Day, The Easy Way
Bill Elkins envisions a day when every child’s lunch box will contain a package of Apple Wedgees, sliced apples that he says stay juicy and fresh for nearly two weeks.
“Kids love them,” said Elkins, a sales representative for Global Fresh, a Yakima company.
The single-serving pouches of pre-cut apple slices will begin test-marketing in Western Washington, starting next week. A box of five pouches, each containing six slices of a Granny Smith apple, will sell for $2.79.
The secret to Apple Wedgees is a “patent-pending process that uses an all-natural ingredient … that retards the spoilage of the apple,” Elkins said Wednesday.
“It doesn’t alter the taste. It doesn’t alter the appearance. It just presents the apple in its natural state but keeps it from spoiling,” Elkins said.
