This Kid Is Quite A Caster
Jordan Reeder, 8, of Kennewick, recently pitched and lobbed his way to a regional semi-final win in the Casting Kids competition in Quincy, Wash. The fishing skills contest, with top prizes of $5,000 scholarships, is sponsored by the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, Rubbermaid and Zebco. Next for Reeder is the national competition, Aug. 3-5 in Greesboro, N.C. The event will be a feature of the BASS Masters Classic.
Ralph Opp, a biologist recently retired from the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department, said his career spanned many ironic breakthroughs in human perspectives toward wildlife.
With a chuckle, he recalled the time he was reprimanded for setting up a nesting box for birds.
“Birds attract bugs, and we don’t want any more bugs,” the supervisor said back in 1965, when Opp was just getting his start as a game biologist in La Grande.
