Two Arrested After 5-Hour Standoff In Lewiston
Lewiston police peacefully ended a five-hour standoff Sunday morning by overpowering and arresting two young men who allegedly had burglarized the town’s Kmart.
Police had believed the 17- and 22-yearold men were armed.
They were not, but they appeared to be when police responded to a call at the store just before midnight Saturday.
Two .30-.30-caliber rifles had been removed from their cases, and knives, ammunition, camping and fishing supplies and bicycles had been placed by a back door of the store.
The suspected burglars did not respond to police on bullhorns calling for them to give themselves up.
The Lewiston emergency response team searched the roof about 5 a.m. and found the pair.
They were sprayed with pepper spray but did not resist arrest, ending the standoff early Sunday morning.
Stanley Robert Jefferies, 22, of Lewiston, was taken to the Nez Perce County Jail on a charge of felony burglary.
The 17-year-old was arrested on an outstanding warrant and sent to the Juvenile Detention Center.
He is to face a felony burglary charge as well.
