Rebels Ambush Army; 36 Dead In Peru Jungle

Guerrillas ambushed an army column in Peru’s eastern jungle region in a clash that killed 36 soldiers and rebels, the military said Friday.

The ambush happened Thursday afternoon near the town of Tingo Maria, 200 miles northeast of Lima, the Defense Ministry said. The military said 16 soldiers were killed and six wounded, and 20 Shining Path guerrillas were killed. It said an undetermined number of rebels were wounded.
