Long-Standing 5,000 Record Broken By Portugese Woman

Fernanda Ribeiro of Portugal set a world record in the 5,000 meters Saturday night, edging the mark of Norwegian Ingrid Kristiansen by almost 1 second.

Ribeiro was clocked in 14 minutes, 36.45 seconds at a local track meet, bettering the mark of 14:37.33 set by Kristiansen on Aug. 5, 1986.

The record stamps the 26-year-old the favorite to win the event at the World Championships, which start in two weeks in Sweden.

The record for the 5,000 was among the four oldest individual marks for women. Kristiansen still holds the marathon record.

The oldest record is the 800 mark of 1:53.28 set by Jarmila Kratochvilova of Czechoslovakia in 1983.
