Father Beheads His Son As Younger Boy Watches

A man on a weekend fishing trip with his sons decided they were all possessed, then stabbed and beheaded his 14-year-old on the roadside while his younger child and passing drivers watched, authorities said Sunday.

The younger boy saw the beginning of the attack, then ran when his brother told him to, Torrance County Sheriff Don Lyles said.

“Did you get my dad?” the 13-year-old boy asked when authorities found him later. “He’s not going to get me, is he?”

“No, you’re safe now,” Lyles told him.

“The father said they were possessed by the devil,” the boy told Lyles.

Authorities gave chase as the father drove away in his van. He threw his son’s head out the window about a mile down Interstate 40, Lyles said.

He was captured early Saturday after a 40-mile chase.

Eric Star Smith, 34, was jailed pending arraignment Monday.
