Dollar Mixed In Seesaw Trading

The dollar turned in a mixed performance Thursday in foreign exchange markets buffeted by cross currents in trading of other currencies against one another.

Trading was in a narrow range, with the dollar moving less than 1/2 yen against Japan’s currency and barely more than a pfennig against the German mark.

In late New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 1.3828 German marks, down from 1.3873 late Wednesday. The dollar also was changing hands in New York at 88.03 Japanese yen, up from 87.82.

Chris Iggo, an international economist at Chase Manhattan Bank, said traders ignored the dollar Thursday as they dabbled in other currencies.
