Winners Announced In Anti-Substance Abuse Effort

A total of 360 entries were submitted by seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade Inland Northwest students in an advertising campaign, “No Substance Abuse,” in an attempt to persuade their peers not to use any alcohol or drugs.

Winners in the Teens Against Substance-Abuse Campaign in each category were:

Video PSA (25 entries): Merit Award was given to Lakes Middle School and students Paul Mitzelfelt, Buddy Savage and Nathan Yount. Award of Excellence to Shaw Middle School and students Tim Chau, Michel Gould, Erica Sullivan, Chelsey Wendt and Kyri Watkins.

Audio tape PSA (eight entries): Award of Excellence to Shaw Middle School and Hank Smith.

Outdoor Advertisement (156 entries) (all of Salk Middle School): Merit Awards to Kristen Palmer and Rick Cerenzia. Award of Excellence, Marcus Robinette.

Print (101 entries): Merit Award to Glover Middle School and Jerry Turner. Award of Excellence to St. Mary’s Middle School and Molly Francis.

Written Editorial (57 entries) (all of Shaw Middle School): Honorable Mentions to Lindzay Miles and Melanie Belcourt. Awards of Merit to an anonymous writer, and Shalynn Blaney. Award of Excellence to Leah Tieman.

Total Campaign (13 entries) (all of St. Mary’s Middle School): Honorable Mention to Jason Falkner, Nick Shrope, Jenny Parks, Jenny Little and Michael Butler. Award of Merit to Tony Willcox, Jeff Carlton, Abby Parsons, Jamie Weir and Theresa Weisbeck. Award of Excellence to Katie Bowles, Kevin Lybarger, Chris Miller, Marissa Hood and Merrilee Curalli.

The University of Idaho’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, general university honorary, has awarded membership to Delores Cleveland and Jennifer Roberts of Pullman, and Kris Petsch of Veradale.

The University of Idaho’s chapter of Tau Sigma Delta, honorary society for architecture and allied arts, has accepted Jana Donoho-Strong, Pullman, and Elisha Stanard, Spokane, into membership.

Bart Popowski, a teacher at Republic (Wash.) Elementary School, has been awarded a national fellowship for an independent study in the humanities by the Council for Basic Education. His topic of study is “The History of the English Language.”
