Alabama Player Cleared

A judge dismissed a slander suit against former Alabama football player Gene Jelks, who had been accused of lying after claiming he received cash and other benefits for signing with the Crimson Tide.

Superior Court Judge Linda Hunter dismissed the suit filed by Jerry Pullen, a former assistant coach at Alabama.

The judge did not elaborate in a written order. But Jonathan C. Peters, Jelks’ attorney, said the judge found that a tape recording Jelks made of a telephone call between himself and Pullen supported Jelks’ allegations, which included claims that Pullen gave him money to sign.
