Record Cold Weather High Reaches Only 46; Traffic Delayed At Airport

Tuesday was so cold that the National Weather Service rewrote the record book for the month of June.

The 46-degree high temperature was the coldest daily high temperature for June in more than a century of record keeping.

The previous record low maximum temperature was 47 degrees on June 3, 1956, and June 7, 1966.

Inclement weather created poor visibility at the Spokane International Airport, where incoming flights were held up for four hours.

Hundreds of travelers were delayed when cloud cover over the airport dropped below 1,000 feet at about 3 p.m., airport spokesman Todd Woodard said.

Landings resumed shortly before 7 p.m. after the cloud cover lifted.

Forecasters are calling for clearing today with a high near 62. Showers are possible throughout the day.

Bob Dylan’s outdoor concert at 8 tonight at Riverfront Park has been moved to the nearby Spokane Convention Center, according to Hal McGlathery, manager of Riverfront Park.

A roof has been erected over the stage at the Lilac Bowl to keep the equipment dry.

Tuesday’s record-breaking weather was caused by an intense low pressure area out of the Gulf of Alaska.

About a half-inch of rain fell Tuesday, bringing the total for the last three days to nearly an inch. Rainfall for the year is nearly 3 inches above normal.

A warming trend is expected as the week wears on, with highs getting into the low 70s by Saturday.
