Helping Hands Program Being Organized By Cops Northwest

Bruce Krasnow Staff Writer

COPS Northwest wants to do more than community policing. Volunteers at one of the newest police substations are trying to get those who need volunteer services together with those who can provide them.

Called Helping Hands, the program is being organized by Dennis McCully, vice president of COPS Northwest, and a retired Coast Guard officer.

McCully wants the program to create a better sense that people in the neighborhood can rely on each other. Already, he has an elderly woman who needs brush and leaves cleared out from her lawn.

Though many asking for help will be disabled or elderly, that doesn’t have to be the case, he said.

“It doesn’t have to be an elderly person, maybe somebody just wants a second person to help hold a ladder or something while they’re building,” McCully said.

COPS Northwest is located in the Shade Park Shopping Center but will be moving to Ash and Wellesley when the mall undergoes renovation.

To volunteer at COPS Northwest or to contact McCully call COPS Northwest at 625-4294 or 625-4295.
