Dollar Stalls With Auto Talks

The dollar fell against the yen and most other major currencies Monday, hurt by growing nervousness over the U.S.-Japanese automotive trade feud and a drop in Japan’s stock market.

Talks aimed at finding a solution to the auto stalemate concluded Monday with no sign of progress. U.S. plans to impose nearly $6 billion in sanctions on Japanese car imports are looming in two weeks.

U.S. officials said there were no plans to meet again today despite Japanese requests for another conference. The dispute over automobiles has come to symbolize trade friction between the two countries.
