Compiled From Wire Services

Nearly 1,000 villagers from the Thai border area streamed into this city Friday after a Khmer Rouge attack that killed 16 people and wounded a number of others, the government said.

A military officer said about 200 Khmer Rouge guerrillas attacked several villages in the northwestern province of Banteay Meanchhey on Thursday. Nine soldiers, four militiamen and three civilians were killed.

Hundreds of government reinforcements were rushed to the Poipet area Thursday amid reports that the Khmer Rouge was firing artillery rounds at Poipet.
