Columbia Chronicles Indian Leaders Buried At Nespelem
Chief Joseph, who led the Nez Perce Indians as they fled the U.S. Army in 1877, is buried in the Nespelem Cemetery. He died on the Colville Indian Reservation in 1904.
Yellow Wolf, another Nez Perce leader and warrior who was part of the rebellion, also is buried in the cemetery.
Both graves are marked.
Colville Confederated Tribes operates a museum and gift shop at 516 Birch Street in Coulee Dam, Wash. Guests see artifacts and exhibits explaining life in the Northwest before settlers arrived and the Columbia was dammed. There are pictures of Joseph and other Indian leaders.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during summer. The museum is closed Sundays during October, November and December. It is closed Sundays and Mondays from January through April.
There is no admission fee, although donations are accepted.
