Cincy Power Downs Atlanta

Pinch-hitter Eddie Taubensee hit a two-run homer to cap Cincinnati’s five-run eighth inning as the Reds out-homered the Atlanta Braves in winning 9-8 Thursday at Cincinnati.

Jerome Walton, Reggie Sanders and Eric Anthony also homered for Cincinnati, while David Justice, Charlie O’Brien and Chipper Jones connected for the Braves.

With Atlanta leading 8-4 in the eighth, Mark Wohlers relieved Greg McMichael with runners on first and second. Anthony, who was pinchhitting, hit Wohlers’ 0-2 pitch for his first homer of the season.

Damon Berryhill doubled, and Taubensee followed with his third home run of the season off Pedro Borbon to complete the comeback.

Los Angeles

Eric Karros hit two homers, including a tiebreaking solo shot in the eighth inning, and Mike Piazza hit an estimated 455-foot homer in Los Angeles’ win over San Francisco.

Rockies 3, Padres 2

San Diego

Armando Reynoso combined with five relievers on a six-hitter to win his first start in 13 months as Colorado beat San Diego.

Houston

Sammy Sosa hit a threerun homer and drove in five runs and Shawon Dunston returned from a two-game suspension with a two-run double as Chicago handed Houston its seventh straight home loss.

Phillies 8, Mets 2

New York

Mariano Duncan had four hits and scored three times as Philadelphia roughed up rookie Bill Pulsipher and beat New York.

Clearing the bases

Montreal Expos pitcher Mel Rojas lost his salary arbitration case and will make $1.3 million this season instead of the $2.1 million he asked for.
