Asphalt Oozing At Oregon Site

From Staff And Wire Reports

Asphalt in a liquid form about the consistency of molasses began oozing out of the ground at a site on the city’s north side during the recent hot weather.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality will have a private contractor examine the site Tuesday, spokeswoman Carolyn Young said.

Local authorities cordoned off the site Friday after Oregon State Police received a report that a baby deer had become stuck in the asphalt and died.

A county health official warned local residents to keep children and pets away from the area.

According to county tax records, the lot is owned by Asphalt Construction Co., which operated from an office in Klamath Falls until 1979.

Bob Baggett, director of environmental health for Klamath County, said officials had not confirmed who owned the property as of Friday.
