Do You Live On Your Own? Call Us

Sharma Shields Ferris

WANTED! Graduates from high school or non-graduates from high school who have moved out and live independently.

Our Generation is working on a story about teens who move away from home, but not those moving to a dorm room somewhere. We want to talk with these independent individuals. Call and leave Cityline a message if you are a youth surviving away from their family. Dial 458-8800 in Spokane or 765-8811 in Coeur d’ Alene and enter category 9894 with your touch-tone phone. You’ll have 60 seconds, which is plenty of time to leave both your name and number. We promise we’ll call for an interview. Don’t let us down!

Movie buffs: Don’t forget we’re looking for replacements for Our Generation movie critic Nathan Mauger. He’s graduated and moving on. If you want his job, send Our Generation at least two movie review samples and a short resume. The address is Our Generation, The Spokesman-Review, 999 W. Riverside, Spokane, WA 99210-1615.

The deadline is July 28. Call 459-5456 if you have any questions.

Camp-o-rama: For all you computer hackers out there (and wanna-be computer hackers), Whitworth College is offering a five-day computer camp in July for kids between the ages of 9-16.

The camp costs $75 and will meet daily from 9 a.m. to noon at Whitworth. It provides individualized computer instruction for students with beginning or advanced computer skills. The class will feature innovative activities and exposure to programming on Macintosh computers.

For more info or to register, call the Whitworth College Center for Gifter and Talented Education, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon, at 466-3225. Pre-registration is required by July 10.

Creative outlet: If you’d rather be painting on canvas than typing on computers, Spokane Art School’s popular Summer Youth Program “Operation Opera” is once again being offered to kids ages 10-15. The month-long workshop will do it all: create a story, make music and sets, design costumes, fabricate props and actually make an opera based on the “Tales of Hoffman,” which the Uptown Opera is producing for The Met in September. Two sessions will be held, but spaces are limited.

Write a one-page letter to Operation Opera, c/o Spokane Art School, 920 N. Howard, Spokane WA 99201, telling why you want to participate in the program and/or what you hope to learn. Letters will not be judged, simply read over to ensure your desire to attend.

The cost is $100 for each two-week session plus a $50 fee for materials and supplies. Some scholarships are available thanks to sponsorship by Washington Trust Bank. For further info, call Spokane Art School at 328-0900.
