Two UW Cutbacks Are Reversed

From Staff And Wire Reports

Two University of Washington departments slated for elimination were spared Wednesday as outgoing President William Gerberding reversed an earlier recommendation.

The Applied Mathematics and Slavic Languages and Literature departments will survive, but in a reduced capacity, Gerberding said in a lengthy memo.

Gerberding decided to proceed with the recommended elimination of the Institute for Environmental Studies and approved severe reductions in the School of Communications.

The state Legislature told the UW to cut $18 million from the school’s budget.

Funding for the School of Communications will be cut by 40 percent, eliminating programs in advertising, public relations and broadcast journalism.
