Stevens County Transit Proposal On Hold

From Staff And Wire Reports

A proposal to establish a public bus system in Stevens County has been put on hold for a year.

County commissioners and mayors throughout the county decided last week to wait until next February before deciding whether to scrap the idea or present a new, scaled-down transit district to voters.

Voters last September rejected a countywide 0.3 percent sales tax to support the proposed Stevens County Area Transit system. But voters in the northern part of the county favored the idea.

The SCAT board, composed of mayors and county commissioners, has been considering another tax proposal that would be limited to the area from Colville and Kettle Falls north to the Canadian border.
