Dodgers Lose Pitching Prospect To Reconstructive Elbow Surgery

Darren Dreifort, who a year ago went from the college campus directly to the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen, had elbow surgery Tuesday and won’t be pitching in 1995.

Dr. Frank Jobe performed reconstructive surgery in Inglewood, Calif.

Dreifort was a first-round pick in the 1993 draft. He was 0-5 with a 6.21 ERA and six saves last season before going to the minors June 23.

The Say Hey Kid is saying nothing to San Francisco Giants replacement players in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Willie Mays is keeping his distance giving autographs instead of advice to players he doesn’t recognize.

The Hall-of-Famer has been a Giants special assistant since 1986, but says he won’t give hitting tips or teach his basket catch to the guys wearing Giants uniforms this spring.

Cuban-born Osvaldo Fernandez earned the victory as the Seattle Mariners beat the California Angels 6-5 in exhibition play at Tempe, Ariz.

Fernandez, who was granted political asylum after sailing to the U.S. in November 1993, has yet to allow a run in three appearances this spring.
