Spurs Consider Putting Former Celtics Star On Roster For Playoffs
San Antonio Spurs coach Bob Hill has revealed the club is considering placing assistant coach Dave Cowens on the active roster for the playoffs.
If Cowens, 46, is activated, he would assume the role the Spurs had hoped veteran Moses Malone would fill.
Malone, 39, has been on the injured list since Jan. 12 and had surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his right leg. He averaged 8.8 minutes backing up All-Star David Robinson.
“I don’t really know what we will do,” Hill said. “I haven’t counted Moses out yet. We have a lot of options available.”
“But (activating Cowens) is conceivable. I wouldn’t say it’s in the upper echelon of things we want to do. But he is in shape and knows the system. But there is a lot of consider,” Hill was quoted as saying in Tuesday’s San Antonio Express-News.
Cowens said he does not expect to play this season, but said it is possible.
Forward Lloyd Daniels has signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for the rest of the season.
Richard Dumas, suspended twice for drug use, returned to the Phoenix Suns.
