Store Clerk Talks; Masked Man Walks

Bonnie Harris Staff Writer

A convenience store clerk told a masked man who entered the 7-Eleven store on North Maple last week that a robbery just wasn’t going to happen, police said.

The clerk told officers the man came inside the store shortly after 1 a.m. last Thursday and walked up to the counter. Before the man said a word, the clerk told him he was not going to open the cash register.

Police said the man paused and then walked out the door.

He was described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds. He wore a red plaid flannel jacket and blue jeans.

Burglars hit antique store

Burglars entered Benson Antiques, 1706 W. Broadway, sometime last Friday night or Saturday morning.

An antique hutch, valued by the shop’s owners at $3,500, was stolen. The hutch is 5 feet wide and 6 feet tall, with dark wood and a center mirror.

Entry to the store was made either with a key or through a window the burglars might have unlocked the day before.

Police are investigating possible suspects.

Burglary suspect arrested

Police arrested a Spokane woman last week on a residential burglary charge.

Katrina Kay Tipton, 18, who gave her address as 3607 W. Broad, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on March 7.

A resident in the 1600 block of North Madison reported a burglary, and witnesses named Tipton as a suspect. Police learned the stolen property - a television set valued at about $500 - may have been sold to two other people.

Police are continuing their investigation.
